STUDY DAY 2

Real People doing Real Things
- through documentaries, propaganda films and photojournalism

A blockbuster three hours exploration through documentary films. This is a nostalgic trip back to that time - within the living memory of many and the recounted memory of others. Fully researched with many film clips.

Lecture 1: The GPO Film Unit
Starting with the beginning of documentary films in France, then through the Edwardian pioneer filmmakers and the Soviet avant garde films to the creation of the GPO Film unit in the 1930s including the classic Night Mail with the poetry of W H Auden and the music of Benjamin Britten.

Lecture 2: Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler’s filmmaker
We look at the iconic controversial films of the incredibly talented Leni Riefenstahl of the 1934 Nuremburg NSDAP Rally and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Her greatest fan and downfall was Adolf Hitler. Her films are stunning and her legacy deserves much more exposure - a remarkable creative woman

Lecture 3: 1950s BRITAIN through the eyes of Picture Post
This classic photojournalism magazine was basically a story board of exceptional photography which sold 2m copies each week. It is a print  version of the documentary genre. It includes the 1951 Festival of Britain which was supposed to be a tonic for the nation. A highly entertaining nostalgic lecture.
OR
Lecture 3: Creating the Golden Era of Transatlantic Liners
